Immediate Concrete Repairs: Avoiding Moisture Issues

In part one of this two-part blog series, we went over some basics on why it's so important to attend to concrete repair needs immediately. Degraded concrete can form for several reasons, but one constant is the way it gets worse with time – and this leads to several trickle-down reasons why getting to repairs for these issues right away is so important.

At Lift Right Concrete, we're here to help. We provide a huge range of commercial and residential concrete lifting and leveling services, from driveway leveling to patios, garage floors, porches and many other areas – including those that may impact your home or building's foundation. Here are several other specific reasons why waiting to address damaged concrete is a mistake, and why immediate action here is the prudent move.

Plumbing Issues

Once again, this is an area that's particularly susceptible when concrete damage issues are in areas that connect to the home's foundation, such as the garage or driveway floor. These areas may have water pipes below them, and these pipes are not invincible.

When the foundation or concrete areas begin to shift or crack here, these pipes may bend or crack with them. And because they're underneath your home, they are pretty tough to access due to the work it will take a plumber to get down there. Even above-ground pipes can be damaged by settling and shifting, as the simple movement of the earth will move them out of alignment.

Mold and Mildew

Down related lines, concrete and foundation problems often lead to water damage by allowing moisture to seep into cracks and other gaps. And a possible impact of this water damage: Mold and mildew setting in, not just in the basement but in other areas of the home as well.

This is a significant risk, especially for anyone in the home with asthma, allergies or other respiratory conditions. On top of that, mold and mildew smell bad and are poor for your home's long-term value, which we went over in part one.

Pest Concerns

And finally, the longer you leave damaged concrete as-is, the greater your risk of pests entering not only the damaged area, but also the rest of the home. Many pests, such as spiders, ants, termites and other insects, breed in humid and moist environments, and will be particularly attracted to any leaking pipes or moldy areas as they look to find a home. Just like mold, these insects can cause health problems and also create major issues for your long-term home value.
